Devon, The High Moors

Small town, 1300ft, highest on Moor. Dominated by Dartmoor Prison since 1805, when prisoners from American War of Independence and Napoleonic Wars first jailed. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle began The Hound of the Baskervilles at The Duchy Hotel (now High Moorland Visitor Centre). Tyrwhitt Trails, named after Thomas Tyrwhitt, founder of town. Walks to nearby North and South Hessary Tors and along old railway line to King's Tor; Swelltor and Foggintor Quarries.
