Devon, East Dartmoor

Attractive old town, once on coaching route Exeter to Plymouth. Interesting shops. William of Orange stayed here on way to London in 1688, and Madame Royale, daughter Louis XIV and Marie Antoinette, sheltered here after parents' execution. Spectacular views from summit of Chudleigh Rock, dramatic limestone outcrop. Prehistoric caves.
